The three most important things to remember when making a TV commercial

1. Hire a really great creative ad agency.

Obviously, we think we’re an excellent choice. And do yourself a favor – there is ONE GUY, one major creative guy (or gal) at the agency you are going to hire who is going to be the major contributor to your television commercial production project. Get to know this person and their work. To be sure, this person may be surrounded by “a cast of thousands” but their brain is going to be the fountainhead of your project. Whether the ad agency you choose is big or small, it’s the talent of this one person and their own personal body of work that will likely decide the success of your project. Word to the wise…
2. Be sure the concept you choose communicates your marketable difference in a clear and fresh way.

The world is full of very entertaining 30-second movies that have memorable creative content but miss the mark as a selling message. Case in point: The next time someone says, “I saw this great TV commercial” and tells you about it, ask them who the commercial was for. It is amazing how often people remember the 30-second “movie” (creative “wrapper”) they saw but not the product or specific brand for which the commercial was created. Or, oftentimes, when people are asked, they will actually remember the commercial as belonging to a competitor! Try this test yourself. It is really quite shocking – millions in advertising are totally wasted because of this common error. This is an error we know exactly how to avoid, of course.
3. Be absolutely sure your TV commercial has tons of emotional appeal.
